Artist Statement: A natural 20 is a Dungeons & Dragons rule term for rolling a result of 20 on a 20-sided die, the maximum possible value, before any bonuses are applied. My son’s interest in D&D effect before the pandemic, but it turned out to be the magic realm that kept him connected, happy, and mentally healthy this past year and a half. When the weather was nice, he would play outside safely with friends, and online when it got too cold. His laughter and excitement each week, spending time with me after telling me all the things that happened….so priceless when we had so little to look forward to when it came to human connection outside of the home. He was a reasonably happy kid with this and it is priceless. D&D was and is my natural 20 from this past year and a half, and I am truly grateful for it. I wanted to honor the connection D&D gave me with my son, and him with others. In a world where some feel so different and alone, D&D was there when in this strange, upside down time, everyone was.
