Arrows - Arrow Earrings
Artist: Sarah Puls
Materials: Sterling Silver, Garnet
Dimensions: 1.75" L
Artist Statement: I felt very connected to this fabric since I myself was an archer for 7 years. I wanted to stay very literal in my interpretation of the design, so I worked to incorporate the uneven, striped look of the arrows on the fabric into my pieces. I felt that garnet and moonstone matched the colors and feel of the fabric, and that the almost inverse color scheme I chose of the light fletches on the dark patina background took a fun spin on the design.
Artist Bio: I am a senior in high school who started making jewelry only about 3 years ago. I have shown pieces in both the LOBES 2022 and 2023 shows, the SMG 2023 biennial show and the Battle of the Rings 2024 (End of an Era). My goal is to be able to continue making jewelry in college and keep showing my work in shows. Maybe I'll start a club and encourage others to try making jewelry as well!
Fabric Motif: The arrow pattern, yagasuri, is a popular pattern of white and colored feathers arranged in an alternating pattern. One shot, an arrow flies strait and does not come back. The arrow is a sacred symbol in Japan believed to bring good luck and ward off evil. After a visit to shrines at New Year's. Japanese often buy a decorative arrow known as a "demon-breaking arrow" to ward off misfortune in the coming year.
This piece was part of the Yukata Inspired 2024, a collaborative exhibition between Okan Arts & Danaca Design featuring metalwork and collage. Learn more and view the entire collection HERE.
