Butterflies with Ikat Fringe - Flutter Necklace
Artist: Jill Griffin
Materials: sterling silver, copper, enamel
Dimensions: 21" chain adjustable with hook and eye clasp. Pendant measures 2-1/2" x 2" x 1/2"
Artist Statement: The butterfly is a symbol of life, beauty and transformation.
Drawing on my recent exploration in enameling I experimented with layering colors and used a variety of application techniques to capture the whimsical pattern and vibrant colors of the fabric.
The wing patterns were drawn on paper and pierced out with a jewelers saw. Holes were drilled to replicate the dotted pattern and a double layer was applied to the pendant to create a two dimensional design.
The copper sheet was literally transformed into intentional and wearable pieces of art.
Artist Bio: A native to Washington state, I’ve been designing and producing jewelry in the Seattle area for close to three decades. I’ve always embraced the idea of handmade, preferring to make something out of love for the process, then experiencing the pleasure that comes from sharing it with others.
Fabric Motif: In Japan, butterflies symbolize metamorphosis and transformation. They are closely linked to recently departed spirits.
