Brandy Worsfold - The Labyrinth Game
Artist: Brandy Worsfold
Materials: sterling silver, acrylic
Size: 9.25
Dimensions: 1.175" height, .25" band width
Artist Statement:
I wanted to challenge what I could fabricate with a torch and saw, and most exciting for me about this ring is the fact that it has a playable game with moving parts! I took inspiration from the movie Labyrinth, where Sarah races through a labyrinth against the Goblin King to save her brother. Even if you don’t know the movie, I think this ring is still fun because of the maze game. The goal is to get the ball in the center circle. I have been able to win it, but to keep it challenging and long term fun for the wearer, I made sure the silver ball was small enough that it loves to spin fast. It’s safely trapped under an acrylic disc.
Quotes from the Goblin King and Sarah circle each other around the inner band and bezel; "I move the stars for no one" and "You have no power over me", which represent the conflict between the main characters of the movie. The labyrinth game can be played above while Jareth, aka Bowie, watches from below, like the many hidden statues of Jareth in the movie.
Artist Bio:
Brandy Worsfold is the artist & silversmith behind Crow Totem Arts. She grew up overseas as a tck (third culture kid)—and lived like a local, exposed to a variety of cultures, religions and world views. She loves mythology, fairytales and rituals, and even as a child researched tons of gods, totems, stories and symbols from all around the globe. She infuses this knowledge within her artwork and stone selections for each piece.
While she’s only been a silversmith for about 5 years, Brandy has been making art for over 20 years with a BFA in Studio Arts, and an MFA in Art Photography. Art isn’t a job or a hobby, art is her life and connection to the world. Whether she is creating jewelry, painting, photographs or writing, her work is filled with symbols and meaning.
