Jennifer Marcson - Internal Lens
Artist: Jennifer Marcson
Materials: sterling silver, aluminum, 24K gold, quartz
Size: 7
Dimensions: 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" x 1 1/4"
Artist Statement:
My work embodies the rage and frustrations that manifest in the bodies and minds of women who are oppressed through verbal assault, physical assault and acts of silencing. Women often internalize these aggressions, resulting in emotional self-harm and denial. I seek to externalize the conflicting emotions that result from these oppressions and the shapes we mold ourselves into to conform with societies idea of femininity.
This ring represents the multifaceted layers of conflicting feelings I have surrounding femininity. Roller printed 24K gold foil represents the ideal femininity which must pass under the quartz lens of society, while the rough torn edges of aluminum indicate a struggle with those impossible ideals.
Artist Bio:
I am an artist, a teacher and a paramedic. Painting was my first passion, but rather than pursuing it directly, I became an EMT when I was 18, already convinced I would never be able to make it in the world as “just an artist.”
I accidentally found a passion for metalsmithing by taking an elective at The University of Toledo and have been making and selling jewelry ever since. My current practice includes jewelry, enameling, fibers and installation. I earned my MFA in 3D studies at Bowling Green State University and teach as an instructor of studio art at Defiance College.
