Cynthia Toops is widely recognized for her artistry in polymer clay, from her impeccable micro-mosaics to her fun, thin-sheet bracelets she has pushed the boundaries of the material through creative techniques and sensitivity to color. In this 5 day class, students will work on projects of their own design, jumping off from a wide selection of Cynthia's samples, while focusing on one or two techniques they wish to explore more intensively -- Micromosaics, carving, canework....this class will cover it all, a sort of independent study with demonstrations designed around the students themselves. It is open to all levels -- artists who want to add a new medium as well as advanced polymer clayers who would like to add new techniques or delve more deeply into particular techniques.

Students MAY Bring:

  • fine tipped tweezers
  • tissue blades

Instructor Bio:

Cynthia has been working with polymer clay since the 1980s. While she is known for her figurative micromosaic pieces, in the last few years she has been concentrating on thin sheet work, creating the cone and claw necklaces and the rolodex series. Most of her work is inspired by ethnic jewelry and ancient beads which she and her husband collect. Cynthia has a BFA in printmaking from the University of Washington and a BA in Biology from Drake University. She spends long hours researching and planning work with Dan Adams, her husband and collaborator. Besides her jewelry work and teaching, she enjoys sushi.
