Kokeshi & Hemp - Double Sakura

Artist: Helen Chang
Materials: Mixed Media
Dimensions: 8x8 in

Artist Statement: I was inspired by the double figures wearing yukata in my fabric sample. I sought to reimagine the figures in a field of Sakura.

Artist Bio: I am a self taught collage artist living in New York City. I have been heavily influenced by the beautiful ravages of aging infrastructure and an idiosyncratic urban environment.

Fabric Motif: Two popular icons intersect in this pattern - kokeshi, a souvenir doll from hot springs resorts of northern Japan and hemp, a traditional fast-growing crop used for rope, textiles and more.

This piece was part of the Yukata Inspired 2024, a collaborative exhibition between Okan Arts & Danaca Design featuring metalwork and collage. Learn more and view the entire collection HERE.
