Artist: Laurel Nathanson
Materials: sterling silver, plexiglass, resin, origami paper, fabric
Dimensions: 2 3/4" across
Artist Statement: As a jeweler and textile artist, with a passion for Japanese textiles and textile techniques, this was an exciting project for me. Through the design and exploration process I really tried to think about bringing what I love about sewing into this work. I am an admirer of sashiko stitching and boro patchwork so being able to bring my version of those techniques into small scale work was very rewarding.
Artist Bio: Laurel Nathanson is a multi-disciplinary artist from Northern California. In addition to creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and art quilts, she teaches sewing and jewelry making in San Francisco. Jewelry, the scale and function, provides a perfect framework for her curiosity to run wild. She is compelled by material exploration and by pushing the limits of her creativity. As a maker rooted in craft, she tries to balance that discipline so ingrained, and so challenging, with the desire to spontaneously create with abandon.
