Artist: Charmi Shah
Materials: Mixed Media
Dimensions: 8x8 in

Artist Statement: "Courage Blooms" and "Dancing Tombo" weave together the fabrics of East and South Asia, blending the elegance of Japanese Yukata and the vibrancy of Indian textiles into a tapestry of mixed media paintings. This collection uses layers of transparent inks to highlight, not hide, the intricate collaged fabrics beneath, inviting the viewer to explore the depth of cultural integration.

Symbols like the Tombo (dragonfly) and Ume (plum blossoms) introduce narratives of resilience, rebirth, and the celebration of life, echoing the themes of strength, success, and the joyous renewal akin to the Indian Holi festival. Through the dynamic interplay of bright pinks and yellows, these pieces encapsulate the essence of Holi—moments of exuberance, community, and the beautiful chaos of colors that signify Spring’s arrival and the promise of new beginnings.

In this collection, I invite you on a journey of cultural harmony and shared human experiences, articulated through the blending of traditions, symbols, and the universal language of art.

Artist Bio:  As a mixed media artist with roots in India, my work is a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, reflecting my cultural heritage and personal experiences. Whether I’m painting vibrant abstracts, florals, or inspirational quotes, collage elements in my work add depth and complexity to the composition. My work is influenced by vibrant color, rich layers of texture, and deep jewel tones that are a reflection of being born into a culture that is radiant with festive and celebratory color.

Fabric Motif: Ume or plum blossom is one of the most auspicious motifs in Japan and represents the end of the winter and rebirth.
