Artist: Yuko Tanaka
Materials: sterling silver, gold fill, mother of pearl, resin
Dimensions: 0.8” x 2” x 0.2” (Length 3” from the top)

Artist Statement: This Yukata fabric showcases a dynamic wave pattern, evoking memories of coastal vistas captured by the 16th-century Japanese master, Sotatsu Tawaraya. Drawing from his artwork for inspiration, I infused abstract coastal scenes into my jewelry designs. The wave pattern delicately pierced into the back plate emerges subtly through the frosted resin, reminiscent of thick fog hovering over water. Asymmetrically placed mother-of-pearls mimic the rugged contours of formidable rocks, echoing the atmosphere of a misty Pacific Northwest coastline.

Artist Bio: Yuko Tanaka crafts jewelry with emphasis on contrast, negative/positive space, and minimalist design. Her creative process is fueled by inspiration drawn from the surrounding natural landscapes, cultural influences, and cherished personal memories. Yuko finds fulfillment in the challenges presented by different materials and treasures the meditative quality of hands-on craftsmanship.

Fabric Motif: A country made up of island, the surrounding water is an important aspect of Japan’s culture. The ocean provides the bounty of food and trade but also looms as a powerful force capable of destruction. The wave motif shares the symbolism of being both life-giving and life-threatening.
