Artist Statement: This ring was made as part of a recent body of work that explores seedpods and their resilience, focusing on methods of seed dispersal. I imagine Wintered Fortress as a woody pod that enters dormancy during cold seasons, remaining strong while waiting for a brighter future to grow in. I liken dormancy to the time we need for self-care to reflect and recharge from our own environmental conditions. Only then can we heal and grow to our full potential.
Technical Process Info: This hollow ring was fabricated using sheet metal. The top form was created with chasing and repousse, while the thorns were made from tubing that I pulled through an oval drawplate. I then added a fine hammered texture to the shank.
Artist Bio: Rebecca Neely grew up in Southeast Michigan and Earned her BFA in Jewelry Metals from Wayne State University in Detroit. While there, she received several awards, including an Undergraduate Research Grant to explore advanced lost wax casting techniques. She completed her MFA in Metalsmithing at Edinboro University in 2024. Rebecca has exhibited with the Michigan Silversmiths Guild, the Allegheny Metals Collective, and Florida Society of Goldsmiths.
