Kate Caswell | The Other

Artist: Kate Caswell, New York
Materials: sterling silver, bronze, cz, freshwater pearls, thread
Size: 8.5

Artist Statement: I am told they are everywhere. That masked and in plain sight, they have infiltrated the highest echelons of world politics and walk among the titans of industry. How many ‘others’ are there? Do we see them on a daily basis? Can we be sure that frog is truly a frog? Or could it be something else living among us? A creature of unrecognizable biology, its belly full of eggs. As it hides behind its mask, we mistake seeing it for what it really is. Is it true facade revolting…or maybe kind of cute? And with every potential answer we uncover a slew of new questions.
I celebrate this event for once again pushing me way out of my comfort zone. I have further exposed my love of the bizarre and incorporated multiple finicky fabricated details I tend to shy away from. So many parts of this project have been trialed, remade and reworked to accommodate the kinetics and clasp mechanisms.

Artist Bio: Based in Western New York State, Kate Caswell specializes in wax carving and lost wax casting. Graduating with a BFA in metals at RIT’s School for American Crafts, she spent many years traveling and working in the production jewelry industry. Kate has made a name for herself with her unique forms, crafting “wearable art” with a tongue-in-cheek attitude and a focus on nature themes.
