Katia Rabey | Folding Ring with Interchanging Gems

Artist: Katia Rabey  Israel
Materials: silver, cubic zirconia
Size: 8

Artist Statement: I first created this ring in 2016 as an exercise for Innovating Stone Setting course. It has a mechanism similar to a folding chair that allows you to change gemstones inside. The best part is that the mechanism is created this way that the ring cannot open while it sits on a finger (if the size fits, of course) because the finger is blocking the clasp, so you can't lose the gemstone.

Artist Bio: Katia Rabey is jewelry designer and graduated from Jewelry Design department at Shenkar college of engineering, design and arts in 2017. In her previous degree she studied literature, and later took a short course in illustration.
'Both of those things came back to me as I was exploring my personal language in jewelry. I realized that even when making wearable objects I prefer to tell stories, often using graphic language, with clear shapes and bright colors. I enjoy kinetics and movement and I like when objects have faces, literal or implied. My tools of choice are CAD and a sense of humor, but I also like to work manually both with precious and not-so-precious materials'.

This ring was part of Battle of the Rings: Ring Smackdown 2024, an online exhibition and competition. View the entire collection HERE, view the matches HERE, and learn more HERE.
