Margaret Baker | Unlikely Pals

Artist: Margaret Baker, Utah
Materials: sterling silver, 14k rose gold
Size: 8.5

Artist Statement: What is happening here? Is it a mouse about to meet his end or his new best friend? I like to think it’s the latter one, and so I’ve been calling this piece “unlikely pals”. When I look at it, the opening lines from “A Whole New World” in Aladdin spring to mind, and I imagine the mouse blob singing it to the snake blob as they travel around my finger. The mouse was made in wax and cast in 14k rose gold, and the snake is forged and carved in sterling silver.

Artist Bio: Sometimes described as “almost cartoonish”, my jewelry tends just to give the impression of the idea I’m trying to convey. While I do prefer things that look amorphous, my skill level has also led me to embrace the impressionistic approach. My jewelry has animal and science themes with contrasting metals and sometimes accent stones. I am a self-taught jeweler, with my formal education including pre-med classes and a law degree. I still use those skills, with the pre-med classes at times influencing the themes of my jewelry.
