Molly Epstein - Lineage

This piece was part of the Yukata Jewelry Show 2022 exhibition. Learn more and view the entire collection HERE.

Artist: Molly Epstein
Materials: glass, Yukata fabric, stainless steel
Dimensions: variable, up to 11" x 1.75" x 1/2"

Artist Statement: The fabric I was given for the Yukata show symbolizes Loyalty and Longevity. With this as a prompt, my family came to mind and "Lineage" came to be. The fabric is tied and tattered, the glass is fragile, and yet it is all still connected. I was thinking about the grief that comes with family ties. The hurt among families is like no other.

Artist Bio: Molly Epstein holds an MFA from the University of Washington (2008) and a BFA from Tyler School of Art (2002). Her work has been driven by an interest in the correlation between physical ailments and emotional states. During her time at UW, Molly collaborated with engineers and surgeons to create prototypes for surgical devices and prosthetics. She had a particular interest in diminishing the number of surgeries children (and their families) had to endure. After having children of her own, she is armed with new experiences from which to draw upon as inspiration for her work. The desire to address and change the patterns of our thoughts caused by our emotional and physical wounds continues to be the impetus for her work.
